The Police commission yesterday reinstated a brotherinlaw of ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra before promoting him to the position of deputy national police chief, seen as a move to pave way for him to lead the police service in October.
Pol Gen Prieopan Damapong returned to active duty following a yearlong hiatus as he was seconded to the PM's Office in the wake of the 2006 coup.
Prieopan's reinstatement was sanctioned by Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej in his capacity as the commission chairman.
In the same order, Lt General Chalor Chuwong, seen as Thaksin's ally, was also returned to the service to assume the position of assistant national police chief.
Prieopan and Chalor have been reinstated to boost the efficiency of the police service, police spokesman Lt General Watcharaphol Prasanratchakit said.
The two's reinstatement would take effect following the issuing of a royal command.
The commission approved a new lineup of 118 senior police officers, many seen as close to the ousted government.
